Why you might need oral surgery

Sometimes, your smile needs a little extra help to stay healthy and strong. Oral surgery is a specialised field of dentistry that focuses on treating problems in your mouth, jaw, and face that cannot be solved with standard dental care.

Here are some of the most common reasons why your dentist or doctor might recommend oral surgery:

Wisdom teeth problems

  • The issue: Your wisdom teeth (the last set of molars to come in) often don’t have enough room to grow correctly. They might come in crooked or only partially emerge (known as being impacted).
  • The solution: Oral surgery is typically needed to carefully remove these impacted wisdom teeth before they cause pain, infection, or damage to neighbouring teeth.

Replacing missing teeth (Dental implants)

  • The issue: You are missing one or more teeth, which can affect how you chew, speak, and the stability of your remaining teeth.
  • The solution: An oral surgeon places dental implants into your jawbone. These posts act as strong, permanent roots for replacement teeth (crowns) that look and feel completely natural.

Fixing jaw issues

  • The issue: Misalignment of the upper and lower jaw (often called an ‘improper bite’ or malocclusion) can make chewing difficult, cause headaches, and lead to wear and tear on your teeth. Injuries or birth defects can also affect the jaw structure.
  • The solution:Corrective jaw surgery (Orthognathic Surgery) realigns the bones of your face and jaw to improve function, speaking, and facial harmony.

Treating mouth and face Injuries

  • The issue: Accidents, sports injuries, or falls can lead to broken or fractured teeth, facial bones, or jawbones.
  • The solution: Oral surgeons specialise in repairing these injuries, ensuring your bite is properly realigned and facial structures are restored.

Preparing for dentures

  • The issue: Before receiving dentures, your mouth might have uneven bone or large bony bumps that would make wearing dentures painful or unstable.
  • The solution: The surgeon performs procedures to smooth out the jawbone and prepare the gums so that your new dentures fit comfortably and securely.

PATIENT REVIEW

After trying various clinics in Luton that kept postponing, leaving me on hold or not having an oral surgeon, I finally found the right one. The only dental clinic that performed my tooth extraction immediately. Oral surgeon-Dr. Khem and Dr. Holly rescued me from pain I’ve been carrying for months now. Finally my wisdom tooth was removed and today I had tears of joy. Being my first extraction I was quite nervous but both doctors made me feel at ease and one of them even held my hand!!

Efficiency, speed, professionalism and care. I really think I’ve found my dentist and even if I don’t live in Hitchin it will be worth going back. I absolutely recommend it. 100%

Thank you again, see you soon!
